Sometimes people ask me how I can stand being an EMT, with all the bad
calls, and all the training to keep my certifications up. A lot of the time its hard to give them a fair answer.
"THE ANSWER"
I could give them the usuall see through answer that they buy, the "Im doing
it to serve my commuity," but what is the real reason we do this? Is it because we are all crazy? Is it because we have no
life? Is it because we have too much time on our hands?
We dont do it for the money, because most cities garbagemen get paid better
than almost all Paramedics. We dont do it for the glory, because theres a lot of times we dont get thanked. If we are not
doing this for pay or glory, why are we doing it?
We see things that most people dont see. We see people in their worst moments,
when they have done something real stupid, or other reasons.
We also reach out to them when other people dont want to. We go to the old
lady's house down the street to take her somewhere, and we make her smile because we are smiling while we treat her. That
just makes her day, when a stranger smiles and visits with her when her own family wont stop and visit her.
We bring life into the world, and we are also there when live passes from this
world to the next. We see things that poeple choose not to see, and go places people dont want to go.
Some of us are volenteers, and work a regular job that lets us leave to go
on calls. People wont recognise us on the street unless we are with the Ambulance or Fire Truck.
So, how do we do it? The only way that can be answered is by looking into our
hearts and answering it apporately. Each person has their own answer, and each answer is different. And each answer is perfect.
